  • Notes
    • JOHN M'LEOD CAMPBELL, born at Ardmaddy House, 4th May 1800, son of Donald O, D.D., min. of Kilninver; educated at home and Univs. of Glasgow and Edinburgh ; licen. by Presb. of Lorn in 1821 ; pres. by George William, Duke of Argyll, 5th May, and ord. 8th
      Sept. 1825.
He became a warm friend of Edward Irving, whose views he adopted, teaching the universality of the atonement and the doctrine of assurance of faith. This gave great dissatisfaction to some of his parishioners, who in 1829 petitioned the Presb., but did not proceed further. On 30th March 1830 another petition from twelve parishioners led to a presbyterial visitation and libel for heresy. The case was carried to the Synod and Assembly, and by a majority of 119 to 6 C. was found guilty and dep. 25th May 1832.
From 17th Sept. 1833 he ministered to a congregation in Blackfriars Street, Glasgow,
till April 1859, when his health broke down; D.D. (Glasgow 1868); died at Rosneath 27th Feb. 1872.
